Chemo

Infusion #1 is complete (the Adriamycin), and I'm headed into the hospital in a couple of hours for infusion #2 (Taxol). It's going to be a good day--my buddy Mike Smith is taking me to the hospital and hanging out for a while, and then my brother Peter is coming to watch the beginning of the Cardinals playoff game (it's a four hour infusion).

Between visits, I'll listen to my new iPOD as I reread The Chronicles of Narnia to get ready for the big movie this Christmas--The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe looks like it's going to be a good one.

So far, I'm feeling pretty good--better than I have in weeks--but I am pretty hopped up on drugs, so that helps. The drugs are just for this week of infusions, so the nurse says I sould enjoy this while I can--next week will be worse.

But it's all part of the process, and I'm learning (slowly) to embrace the process, all its ups and downs.

For now, I'm adding songs to my iPOD, so I've gotta go. Thank you to all of those readers who were part of the "first day of chemo" gift--especially thank you to Melanie for organizing it and surprising me. It's a perfect gift.

Add to the Beauty

In any crisis, we may ask, "Why?" As rational humans, we crave the why because it helps make sense of our world, the reasons, even the chance to possibly predict the outcome and to maintain control of the crisis. And though I don't have any definitive answers, what I do have is a reflective experience. For the most part, the why may or may not be answered in this lifetime. However, what I have discovered is the pause to stop in the midst and catapult oneself to 30,000 feet, alleviating the intensity to let God show you a glimpse of what He is doing. The McMaynor Summer of Reading Plan

It's time to start blogging again. It has a been crazy, crazy year with summer now upon us, and I'm excited to be with my family. Ice tea and gardening. Family projects and travels. Movies and books. And so many stories already. At some point at the inception of summer break, Max and Todd had an interesting interchange that has evolved into a family summer reading challenge. Max, an avid reader, says to Todd, rather randomly: You know how you say you don't read very much, Dad?  Todd: Um, yes? Max: Well, maybe you should read more. I challenge you to read ten books this summer. If you read ten, I will pay you a reward. Max is so much like Brian!
